Holy Wow! Now that is some concrete heaving! That picture is from a home that I showed to a buyer this morning. To protect the homeowner, I will not reveal the address, but I can say that it is located in a part of town that is known for it’s bentonite deposits. Bentonite is a mineral in the earth that expands when wet, absorbing as much as several times its dry mass in water. I can’t say for sure what caused this, but the most common cause is when water is allowed to flow down, around and under the foundation of a home. When that water happens to come in contact with bentonite, that bentonite expands and pushes against anything in its way, including concrete foundations. This can be the result. So, this is an extreme reminder of why it is so important to maintain proper drainage away from the foundation of your home! Want to know more, contact me and I can send you diagrams as to what is considered proper.
